Cley Parish Council is very excited to announce we’ve been awarded a North Norfolk Big Society Fund grant of £15,000 to build an accessible public toilet in the centre of the village. We are extremely grateful to North Norfolk District Council for giving us the maximum amount possible, which shows they agree the toilet is very important to the village. It is the best start to our campaign.
Thank you also to Hudson Architects, for their plans for a smart brick toilet building and to the Village Hall for letting us use their land
Thank you also to Hudson Architects, for their plans for a smart brick toilet building next to the main entrance to the Village Hall, which has helped us get so far, and to the Village Hall, who have very kindly agreed we can use their land.
Our vision is for a welcoming, hygienic, accessible and free community toilet in the heart of the village
At the moment, the only open public toilet in Cley is a rented PortaLoo, not terribly salubrious or easy to get in and out of.
Our vision is for a welcoming, hygienic, accessible and free community toilet in the heart of the village.
Cley is a well spread out village set in glorious countryside, and we’re often out and about walking our dogs, biking down to the beach, gardening on the allotments, shopping, or playing with our children and grandchildren on the playground. It would be very handy to have a toilet we can all use when not close to home!
We also have lots of visitors here enjoying our beautiful village: walking, biking, shopping, birdwatching – the free village car park was full most of the summer. We’re often being asked where the nearest public toilet is and Blakeney is a long way away!
If you would like to help bring our vision to reality, we would be immensely grateful
Our preliminary quotes show that building this toilet will cost about £35,000-40,000, plus there will be on going cleaning, maintenance etc.
With our grant, we already have been given a substantial percentage of the cost of building the toilet. We will be starting to raise the remaining £20-25,000 in the new year. We’re hoping in the very near future we will be eligible for gift aid on donations, so every £1 donated brings us £1.25 nearer to completion.
If you would like to help bring our vision to reality, we would be immensely grateful. Please do get in touch with Cllr Dr Victoria Holliday or the Parish Clerk to learn how.
Our community toilet has already been twinned with a toilet in Uganda
Cley’s community toilet has already been twinned with a latrine in Kabale District, Uganda, courtesy of toiletwinning.org. All we need to do is build our toilet so we can have somewhere to hang the certificate!
